Don’s Drafts

Don Groves

Spring is just around the corner.

I know because I’m beginning to sneeze regularly and my eyes itch almost nonstop.

But even with the suffering I’ll gratefully accept my allergies knowing that warmer weather is almost here to stay. Already I’ve found myself eyeballing vegetable seeds, which began showing up here in stores last month.

The garden itself is all ready to go. Spinach, lettuce, Swiss chard, peas and other cool weather goodies will be going in soon.

And although we’re weeks away from warm weather plants such as tomatoes and peppers, I’ve still got a couple of Brussels sprouts planted last fall to harvest and steam.

This should also be the spring the asparagus bed we put out pays off. The kids don’t care much for asparagus but that’s all right, it just means more for us adults.

Of course it’s seemed like spring off and on nearly all winter but now the days are getting longer, the temperature’s more likely to be warm and the outdoors are even more enjoyable than they have been.

Soon I’ll be opening our windows, listening to the birds and enjoying the spring breeze — in between sneezing and rubbing my eyes.
